It can be quite tiring as there’s lots of different things that need to be balanced and it can get a bit overwhelming if you fall behind on tasks. With screen printing research I also spend alot of time setting up equipment and cleaning it down after use, scrubbing screens can be quite draining. However, engineering jobs are very varied and it depends on what role you have and how you manage it. Being able to stop thinking about work when you are home helps. Since the pandemic I now have to do office work at home and I cannot go out to do many of my hobbies, so those lines have blurred which has made it a bit harder.

It can be! Sometimes if we are going to visit a site to do an inspection then we will work an extra-long day to make it worthwhile – it may be that we need to walk the entire length of a river to assess the flood banks, or maybe walk a long strength of canal to investigate making improvements to the towpath. It can be tiring, especially if the weather’s bad, but I still enjoy being outdoors and we can always work shorter hours the following day to make up for it 🙂

It can be, depending on how many projects I am working on and what tasks there are to do.

When was doing some work building parts on one of our metal 3D printers, that could get very physically tiring as it was quite a manual job to do. And sometimes if I am trying to solve a very complex problem, that can be quite mentally tiring as I am thinking a lot! If I get too tired, I tend to go and have a rest or do something else and then come back to it.

I wouldn’t say it was particularly more tiring than any other job. Sometimes you’re tired after a whole day of using your brain (like after a whole day of difficult lessons!). When I’m onsite it can be tiring being on your feet all day as well, but you get used to it.

Yes, sometimes. Currently I am working on many projects and sometimes that can be very tiring depending on your tasks and responsibilities.

As everyone else said, it depends 🙂 It is not really physically tiring as other jobs may be, but I find it particularly tiring if I have a lot of meetings and I am talking with a lot of different people about different topics that need you to kind of get into the right mindset. When I have a day of working by myself, even if it is on something challenging like trying to solve a new problem, I find that quite energising. I guess it can feel a bit tiring if you are dealing with the exact same problem for a long time though. There are always different things to do, and some days may be more tiring than others – I try to organise my days so that I don’t have too much of one thing so that it doesn’t get tiring. It is also important to do other things outside of work to make sure you don’t spend too much time thinking about it – that would make it also more tiring.
