There are loads of different types, the ones I know are Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computational Engineering Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Medical Engineering, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Structural Engineering, Sustainable Engineering and Product Design Engineering. However, there are even more types again than this.

Sarah-Jane’s answer pretty much covers it but just to add you could study/work as one discipline of engineering and go into a completely different industry or line of work from someone else who studied/works as the same discipline (for example a Civil Engineer in the renewable energy industry or a Civil Engineer in the transport industry). A lot of disciplines have crossovers and relate closely with each other too!

There are so many different types! To add to what others have said, there are so many cross overs. I started out doing Chemistry, and that led me into doing Materials Science and Engineering. The research I do could then have impacts for Civil Engineers, Aerospace Engineers, Mechanical Engineers or Structural Engineers when they’re thinking about what materials to use in building and designing, or materials science is important to consider for engineering sustainable solutions in society too.

It’s a vast range of disciplines from construction, aerospace, automotive, space exploration, medical, pharmaceutical, mining, marine exploration, earth sciences and power generation, engineers at at the heart of making things work, and being able to diversify and adapt is essential

There are so many great answers already but one thing I would like to add is that in many projects many different engineers work together to create the solution. This is because of not only the overlap between the different disciplines, but also the nature of many complex projects which nowadays often involve lots of different mechanical, electrical and computer-based systems. For example creating a new aeroplane might involve not only aerospace engineers but also mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, design engineers, systems engineers, software engineers, materials engineers, structural engineers, manufacturing engineers…

There are so many different types!! and all are very interesting! We have Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. Within these four common types of engineering sits a variety of specialisms like Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Marine Engineering, Nuclear Engineering and Structural Engineering and many many more!
